Sock Size Chart: Find Your Size (Men & Women)

Quick answer: Choose your Mi Socks size by your usual US shoe size. M fits men's 6 to 8 and women's 5 to 9. L fits men's 9 to 12 and women's 10 to 13. XL fits men's 13 and up and women's 14 and up. Crew and Knee High use the same sizes. Between sizes or a half size? Size up.

Mi Socks size chart

This chart covers every Mi Socks pair, crew and knee high. Find the US shoe size you wear most days in the men's or women's column, then order the sock size in that row.

Mi Socks sock sizes by US shoe size
Mi Socks size Men's US shoe size Women's US shoe size
M 6–8 5–9
L 9–12 10–13
XL 13 and up 14 and up
  • Half sizes: size up. A men's 8.5 takes L and a men's 12.5 takes XL. A women's 9.5 takes L and a women's 13.5 takes XL.
  • Crew and Knee High: both lengths come in M, L and XL and use this same chart.
  • Smaller feet: our smallest size is M. If you wear a men's shoe smaller than 6 or a women's shoe smaller than 5, contact us before you order.
  • Much bigger feet: XL is our largest size. If your shoes are well above a men's 13, contact us before you order and we'll help you check the fit.
  • Not sure of your shoe size? Measure your foot with the steps below. It takes about five minutes.

How do I determine my sock size?

Start with your shoe size, not a sock size from another brand. Brands draw their size lines in different places, so a Large somewhere else may not be a Large here.

  1. Find your usual US shoe size. Go by the shoes you wear most, ideally a pair bought in the last year or two.
  2. Find that size in the men's or women's column of the chart above. Use the column that matches the shoes you buy.
  3. If you are between sizes, on a half size, or your feet swell by evening, choose the larger size.

If you don't know your shoe size, or you haven't been measured in years, measure at home. Harvard Health notes that feet change with age, often growing larger and wider, so the size you wore ten years ago may not be your size today.

How to measure your feet for socks

You need a sheet of paper, a pencil, a ruler or tape measure and, if you can, a helper.

  1. Measure later in the day. The CDC and NIDDK both suggest fitting shoes at the end of the day, when feet tend to be largest. The same goes for socks.
  2. Keep a thin sock on. Your foot stays covered, and the fit is close to how you will wear your new socks.
  3. Stand on the paper with your heel against a wall. Put your full weight on that foot. Patient guidance from PeaceHealth notes that your foot is longer when you stand.
  4. Mark the tip of your longest toe. It is not always the big toe. Hold the pencil straight up and down so the mark is accurate. If bending down is hard, ask someone to make the mark for you.
  5. Measure from the wall edge of the paper to the mark, in inches or centimeters.
  6. Do both feet and use the longer one. Harvard Health advises fitting the larger foot when one foot is bigger than the other.
  7. Find your length in the tables below. If it falls between two rows, use the longer row.

The lengths below come from the scale on the Brannock Device, the metal foot measurer found in many US shoe stores. On that scale each whole shoe size is 1/3 inch longer than the one before, and for the same foot the women's size number is one higher than the men's. Some shoe brands put that gap at 1.5 sizes instead, so a men's 8 may be sold as a women's 9.5. We rounded each length to the nearest 1/8 inch. Shoe brands vary a little, so if the tape and the shoes that fit you disagree, trust the shoes.

Is my sock size the same as my shoe size?

No. One sock size covers a span of shoe sizes, because knit socks stretch to fit. Mi Socks L, for example, covers men's shoe sizes 9 to 12. Brands also split their sizes at different points, so always use the chart for the socks you are buying. If a package shows only a number instead of a letter, see the section on numbered sock sizes below.

How sock sizes compare across brands

Sock sizes are not the same from brand to brand. We checked four brands' published size charts on October 12, 2026. A men's 9, for example, is a Large at Feetures and at Mi Socks but a Medium at Darn Tough.

Sock sizes by US shoe size at Mi Socks and four other brands, checked October 12, 2026
Brand Medium Large X-Large
Mi Socks Men's 6–8, women's 5–9 Men's 9–12, women's 10–13 Men's 13 and up, women's 14 and up
Feetures Men's 6–8.5, women's 7–9.5 Men's 9–12, women's 10–13 Men's 12.5–15.5
Darn Tough (men's and unisex chart) Men's 8–9.5, women's 10–11.5 Men's 10–12, women's 12–14 Men's 12.5–14.5
Wigwam (stretch socks) Men's 5–9.5, women's 6–10 Men's 9–12, women's 10–13 Men's 12–15
RocknSocks (numbered sizes) Size 9–11: men's 7–8.5, women's 6–9.5 Size 10–13: men's 9–13, women's 10–12 Not listed

Darn Tough also sells a Small for men's 5.5 to 7.5, which is why its Medium starts higher. Brands update their charts, so check the current chart before you buy another brand's socks. Links are in the sources below.

What is sock size 9–11 or 10–13?

Some socks are labeled with a number or a number range instead of a letter. That number is a sock size, not a shoe size. It roughly tracks the length of your foot in inches, not your shoe size.

  • 9–11: RocknSocks calls this its Medium and lists it for women's shoe sizes 6 to 9.5 and men's 7 to 8.5.
  • 10–13: RocknSocks calls this its Large and lists it for men's shoe sizes 9 to 13 and women's 10 to 12. On the Brannock scale, men's 9 to 13 is a foot about 10 3/8 to 11 5/8 inches long.
  • Single numbers: Wigwam lists its size 10 fitted sock for men's shoe sizes 6 to 8, which is a foot about 9 3/8 to 10 inches long.

To find your Mi Socks size, skip the sock number and go by your shoe size or your measured foot length in the tables above.

What sock size is a women's 7?

At Mi Socks, a women's 7 is a size M, which covers women's 5 to 9. It is a Medium at most other brands too: Feetures puts women's 7 to 9.5 in Medium, and Wigwam puts women's 6 to 10 in Medium. Darn Tough's women's chart is the exception and lists a women's 7 as a Small.

What size socks for size 10 feet?

For a men's or women's size 10 shoe, choose Mi Socks L. L covers men's 9 to 12 and women's 10 to 13. A men's 10 is also a Large at Feetures, Darn Tough and Wigwam.

If you mean a foot that measures 10 inches long, that is about a men's 8 or a women's 9 shoe on the Brannock scale, which is our M.

Is it better to size up or down on socks?

For diabetic and non-binding socks, size up when you are unsure. A sock that is a little small pulls across your toes and stretches the top band tighter around your leg. The American Diabetes Association suggests socks that fit well and aren't too tight, and NIDDK says not to wear tight socks. Darn Tough and Feetures also tell shoppers to size up when they are between sizes.

Just don't go so big that the sock bunches. Extra fabric can fold under your foot or over your toes, and your shoe presses that fold into your skin. NIDDK also says not to hold up loose socks with rubber bands. If the heel pocket of a sock sits on the back of your ankle, it is too big, so go down a size.

Crew or Knee High: do the sizes change?

No. Crew and Knee High Mi Socks use the same M, L and XL chart. Crew socks reach mid-calf, and knee high socks end just below the knee. Both have the same non-binding top band, knit loose so it stays up without squeezing. Choose the length you like, then choose the size by your shoe size.

If your calves are wide, still start with your shoe size, and size up if you are between two sizes. Our guide on how diabetic socks should fit walks through the top band, heel and toe.

How do I choose the right size diabetic socks?

Use the same chart, then add these checks if you have diabetes, neuropathy or feet that swell.

  • Check the fit by eye, not only by feel. The CDC says about half of all people with diabetes have some kind of nerve damage, which can make it hard to feel a band that is too tight. After the first day in new socks, roll the top down and look. A faint line that fades soon is common with any sock. A deep groove or a red ring means the sock is too small or too tight. Read why socks leave marks on your legs.
  • Look at your feet each evening when you take your socks off, including between your toes, as NIDDK suggests. Look for red spots where a seam or a fold pressed.
  • If your feet swell during the day, measure in the evening and choose the larger size when you are between two. Our guide to the best socks for swollen feet covers lengths and fit.
  • Call your doctor right away about swelling that is new or worse in only one leg, or a swollen foot or leg that is red or warm to the touch, as MedlinePlus advises. MedlinePlus also says to call 911 if you are short of breath or have chest pain.
  • Don't wait on a sore spot. NIDDK says to call your health care provider right away about a cut, blister or bruise on your foot that isn't getting better after a few days, or skin that turns red, warm or painful. A different sock size is not the answer to these.
  • If your doctor has prescribed compression stockings, follow the fitting instructions you were given. Mi Socks are non-compression comfort socks, and this chart is not for compression sizing.
  • If you switch to a thicker, cushioned sock, check that your shoes still leave about a thumbnail's width of space past your big toe, as the American Diabetes Association suggests.

Buying socks for a parent or partner?

Look for the size printed inside the shoes they wear most. If they buy women's shoes, use the women's column. If they buy men's shoes, use the men's column. If their shoes are old, or they have trouble finding a good fit, help them measure with the steps above, since feet can get larger with age. When you are unsure between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Do you make socks for big feet?

Yes. Our XL is for men's shoe size 13 and up and women's 14 and up, in both crew and knee high. If your shoes are well above a men's 13, contact us before you order and we'll help you check the fit.

Should I order one pair first?

If you're unsure of your size, a single pair for $9.99 (plus $4.95 shipping) lets you check the fit before you buy a pack. Torn between two sizes? Two single pairs, one in each size, come to $19.98 and ship free. Once the size is right, the 6-pack works out to $6.00 a pair in crew or $6.17 in knee high.

Will the socks shrink?

Cotton-rich socks can shrink a little in hot water or a hot dryer, and Mi Socks are 80% cotton. To keep the fit you ordered, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang to dry, with no bleach or fabric softener.

Are men's and women's Mi Socks sized differently?

No. Mi Socks are one sock style for women and men, and you choose by shoe size. Use the women's column if you buy women's shoes and the men's column if you buy men's shoes. Both columns point to the same M, L and XL socks.

Are all the pairs in a pack the same size?

Yes. You choose M, L or XL once for the whole pack, so every pair in a 3, 6 or 12-pack is the same size.
