Quick answer: Sock sizes aren't shoe sizes, and every brand's XL stops in a different place. Our XL fits men's 13 and up and women's 14 and up, but we don't promise a fit at 15. If your shoes are well above a men's 13, contact us before you order. For a men's 15 and up, look at brands that publish that range, such as Extra Wide Sock Co., Darn Tough and Wigwam.
XL has no standard meaning, so the only way to know is to read each brand's chart. Here's how sock sizes map to shoe sizes, what several brands list at the top of their range, and how to choose a diabetic or non-binding sock.
How sock sizes map to shoe sizes
- Letter sizes cover a span. One sock size fits several shoe sizes because knit stretches. The span differs by brand.
- Number sizes aren't shoe sizes. "Sock size 13-16" can look like a shoe size, so read the shoe size line next to it. Sugar Free Sox, for example, sells a sock size 13-16 and lists its XL for men's shoes 13 to 16.
- Men's and women's numbers differ. A women's size runs about one number higher than the men's. Some brands only list men's sizes at the top end, so convert first. Our sock size chart shows how to measure your foot.
- Length and width are different problems. A long, narrow foot and a short, wide one can both outgrow a sock. If the problem is width, see socks for wide feet.

All of these are sold as loose, non-binding or relaxed. If you're a men's 13, you have several choices. If you're a men's 15, our chart doesn't give you a firm answer, so a brand that lists your size is the safer first try.
Where to look for size 15 socks and up
- Extra Wide Sock Co., sold at XLFeet. The Loose Fit Stays Up line lists XL for men's 15.5 to 19. Stock varies by color: the tan 3-pack was in stock in XL when we checked, while the white 3-pack and black single pair were out in that size. XLFeet's shipping policy offers free shipping on sock orders of $80 or more in the lower 48 states.
- Darn Tough. Its chart lists XXL for men's 15 to 17. These are performance socks, not loose-top socks, and XLFeet notes that at least one style won't fit wide feet.
- Wigwam. Its stretch sock chart lists 2L for men's 15 to 17, and one tube sock for 9 to 17.
- Feetures. Its X-Large stops at men's 15.5, so it suits a 15 but not much more.
Diabetic socks for men, size 13 to 15
If you have diabetes, a sock that's too small is more than annoying. Stretching a short sock over a long foot pulls the top band tighter around your leg, and the NIDDK says "Do not wear tight socks or elastic stockings." It also says nerve damage can make you lose feeling in your feet, so you may not notice a problem. Check your feet each evening, including between your toes.
Three quick checks when a new pair arrives:
- The heel of the sock sits on your heel, not under your arch.
- Your toes lie flat, with no pull across the top of the foot.
- The top band isn't stretched so far that it leaves a deep ring by evening.

Extra large diabetic socks for women
Women's sizes often stop sooner. Diabetic Sock Club's women's Large ends at 13.5, and Viasox lists its L/XL for women's 13 to 14. Our XL is for women's 14 and up. Beyond that, use the men's column and convert your size.

Is a size 13 sock the same as a size 13 shoe?
Not always. Some labels give a sock size number and some give a shoe size. Look for the line that says shoe size.
